Canadian volunteer, régiment des Zouaves pontificaux, 1868-1870

The régiment des Zouaves pontificaux was part of the army of the Papal States. This unit was raised from Roman Catholic volunteers from various countries, mainly France and Belgium. There was a significant Canadian contingent from Quebec. The original Zouaves were a famous French colonial unit recruited in North Africa, and the zouave style was very fashionable during the 1860s.
