Officer's shakos, British Light Dragoon regiments, circa 1820

Officer's shakos, British Light Dragoon regiments, circa 1820

In 1812, British regiments of Light Dragoons adopted a shako as headdress. This watercolour shows some of the variations seen amongst officers' shakos, circa 1820. The two top pictures show the front and back of the most common pattern, with a band of interlocking gold lace circles around the top. Below are two variations worn by specific regiments (neither of which served in Canada): lower left - 8th (The King's Royal Irish) Regiment of (Light) Dragoons; lower right - 11th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons.
